Use Social Media Apps To Acquire New Patients and Engage & Service Existing Patients

Social Media Marketing is another very important aspect of your marketing. Your potential and existing are hanging around on Facebook. You have to make it easy for them to do business with you.  Here are 5 steps.

What kind of social media posts are available for doctors and medical practice?

While each social media platform is a little different, three types of posts are universal across all platforms. Each platform also has some other features that may be useful, but one would have to log in to each one to utilize them. The three types of posts are Text, Links, and Photo/Video.

Texts Posts:  Text posts are the simplest types of social media posts that are available. As the name suggests, this post is just text and is usually just a sentence or two long. In some cases, when there is a significant announcement, it can be several paragraphs. Generally, everyday text posts convey simple information such as an early closing or a congratulatory message to a staff member or local organization.

Link Posts:    Link posts are more common than text posts because many doctors and medical practices want to share information or direct people to their websites. In these posts, a link is presented along with some sentences describing to people what to expect. If the web designer of the site the link is sending people to is skilled, it should automatically generate a thumbnail that will match the website’s content. For example, if a doctor or medical practice wanted to share the news that they take online appointments, they would usually share a link in a posting.

Photo or Video Posts:  Photos and video posts are posts that, as you may have guessed, feature photos or videos. Photos could be of people, the medical practice, doctors, staff, or infographics to educate an audience. Videos pretty much do the same thing, except there is some movement involved and some sound. Videos can be real people or animations. Some social media platforms limit these videos to 60 seconds, while others have no limits at all.

What kind of social media posts get the most engagement?

Posts on social media are meant to get attention from the people who follow the page and hopefully be shared to get wider exposure. Of the three posts mentioned above, photos and video posts often get the most engagement and exposure. People like visual media, and these are often the most engaging. Photo and video posts can also include links, so many practices and doctors will use this kind of post while promoting their services.

Your social media channels must promote links to these services at a medical practice. However, a doctor must be careful to ensure that the promotion of services is not the only thing they post online. To break things up, social media channels should share local and national health stories, information about local events, and other things important to the community, like when a school wins a championship. If a social media channel always tries to “sell” something to patients, people will quickly lose interest and unfollow the accounts.

How should medical practices and doctors use Social Media channels to their benefit?

Facebook

Facebook is going to be one of the leading social media channels a medical practice and doctor uses. In addition to posting text, links, photos, and videos in posts, a medical practice can get messages from patients, host a Q&A, raise money for local charities, post a phone number, Livestream from the page, and offer gift cards. Not all of these different features will be useful to all medical professionals, and some may only be used once in a while. However, they are available to you to experiment with!

An important thing to remember about Facebook is that a doctor or a medical practice needs to make a Facebook Business Page, not a Facebook Profile. Profiles are for people, and pages are for businesses and other entities. Creating a Facebook Business Page will allow a page to have more than 5,000 likes and followers and give users access to analytics and Facebook’s powerful advertising platform. Plus, it is also a violation of their Terms of Service to use a profile as a business, so it is best to make a page.

Facebook’s advertising platform can reach a lot of valuable potential patients in the community. While its reach will not be as large as Google Pay Per Click (PPC) ads are, there are more ways to refine the audience. Both Google and Facebook allow you to target by location, using zip codes or creating a radius around an address. Facebook will enable marketers to also target by gender, age, and interests. This smaller audience, if designed correctly, should have a high conversion rate because it will be marketing to a valuable audience.

Instagram:  While Facebook owns Instagram, there are different sets of rules on this platform. First, all posts need to have some media element to them. There either needs to be a photo or a video. Although some people get around this by posting pictures of text they have written, text-only posts are not allowed. Also, the only links allowed on Instagram are in a user’s profile. Any link posted in comments or in the next part of the post will not be hyperlinked. Unlike Facebook, you do not need to create a unique profile to use it as a business account. Someone needs to visit the settings and select it as a business account, so more features become available to doctors and medical practices.

As you may have guessed, more visual media is a high priority on Instagram. Photos of the medical practice, the doctors, and infographics play well on here. Also, make use of hashtags that will help categorize and organize your posts in the Instagram community. For example, after posting a picture of a new x-ray machine, attach #xray #xraymachine #doctorsoffice to the post so that when people click on those tags, that picture will be included with other similar images.

Much like Facebook, Instagram has a good advertising platform that allows you to target other Instagram users. The platform is similar to Facebook, so it should be reasonably easy to navigate. This platform also will enable you to boost Instagram Stories, which are short 15 second photos or videos that vanish after 24 hours. Many doctors use these stories to promote special events or services and have seen good conversation rates with them.

Twitter:  Twitter is not as valuable for medical practices and doctors in many cases compared to Facebook or Instagram, but it is still a big social media platform they should have profiles on. Twitter does not distinguish between a business profile and a personal profile, so there is no need to do anything special in that area. One of the most significant differences is that you are limited to 280 characters in your posts, including spaces and punctuation. However, links count only for 23 of those characters, so if there is a huge link to share, you can still post quite a bit with it. Posts can also include photos or videos, with the videos having a 2-minute time limit in most cases.

While advertising on Twitter is available, many doctors do not use it and instead put that money into Facebook ads to have more room to write posts. However, some doctors have found success in advertising on this platform. Advertising on this platform provides users most of the same features they would have on Facebook or Instagram.

Twitter makes heavy use of hashtags as well. Some doctors will participate in weekly public discussions among other doctors who will tweet about a subject to their followers. These meetings often have hashtags associated with them so past comments can be seen, and the current discussion can be organized for someone to summarize later. For example, if doctors are talking about COVID-19, they could use #COVID19Talk or #COVID19Advice in each of their tweets to keep things organized.

Google Business Profile:   A medical practice is Google Business profile has a social media feature where updates can be posted. These updates can be text, links, photos, videos, and also highlight events or even promotions. These updates appear in Google Business profiles when they are displayed in search results. While, they will not get as much interaction or views as these other social media profiles, updating them with posts frequently is essential. To a patient, they will see the doctor or practice is actively sharing information to the community.

Unlike Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, there is no advertising or boosting element to the platform. All marketing on Google goes through their Google AdWords program.

Can a medical practice or a doctor use the private messaging feature on social media channels to interact with patients?

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even Google have features on their platform that allow users to message them. However, this mode of communication can not be used to make appointments or discuss medical information. If a patient sends a doctor any personal health information over private messaging, it needs to be deleted. These chatting features are not HIPAA compliant. A doctor or medical practice is responsible for all data sent to them, and that data needs to be stored on a HIPAA compliant server, and access to it needs to be limited. These social media channels do not provide that level of security in their private messaging features.

However, chatting with patients can still be very valuable. Questions about services, business hours, directions, or other non-private medical information-related topics can easily be discussed over chat. Monitoring four social media channels for messages can be a daunting task, so be sure someone can watch it before you turn these messaging systems on. If you can not quickly respond to messages, turn them off and post a message to encourage people to contact a doctor or a medical practice through a website.

Are there any other social media channels that doctors or medical practices should consider?

The four social media channels mentioned above are generally considered to be the big ones that are the most useful to doctors and medical practices. With that said, some businesses have found Snapchat, TikTok, and Pinterest to also help promote their business. Each social media channel has an advertising platform and has quite a few users. However, the video and picture-heavy nature of these social media channels does not easily lend itself to every possible situation regarding medical practices on their doctors. Some medical spas have found value with them and continue to experiment with them. Another issue with these platforms is that they are widely unavailable for posting services, and some only allow you to post from a phone. This makes using them time-consuming and not efficient.
